What is the difference between solid core doors and hollow core doors?

8/20/2022

Solid core and hollow core are two types of doors commonly used in interior construction. As the name suggests, a solid core door is solid all the way through the door and made from a mixture of wood and synthetic composites, while a hollow core door generally has honeycombed cardboard or plastic between the outer pieces of wood. Hollow core doors are becoming more popular due to their affordability, but it’s important to consider the following when choosing the types of doors to place in your home:

Soundproofing and Insulation

Solid core doors typically have better insulation and soundproofing.

Structure

Solid core doors are heavy and durable, whereas hollow core doors can more easily be damaged but they’re lightweight.

Affordability

Solid core doors range from $70 to $250 in price and hollow core doors range from $50 to $150 in price, making hollow core doors a more affordable option.

Looks

Unlike hollow cores, solid core doors can be carved, and are often used for elegant designs.

Maintenance

Solid core doors are generally easier to repair, but can warp with temperature changes depending on their composition. Hollow core doors are not as prone to warping, but are more challenging to repair.

In Summary

Many homeowners choose a mix of both door types instead of limiting to just one. Solid core doors are great for sound insulation and privacy, and are often used for exterior facing doorways, bathrooms, and bedrooms. These doors are more expensive, however, and are heavy to move around. Hollow core doors are affordable alternatives that are easier to install yourself, but are less durable and often used for closet and pantry doors.
